Due to an amazing increase in ignorant spam accounts, we have had to change our sign-up process. This unfortunately happens once a site is popular, it gets into Google’s search results, and the spammers find the registration URL’s and hit them with automated registration submissions.

This has meant we are weeding out a dozen or more new blogs a day that are all about things like Viagra and Luis Someone handbags.

So from now on, you can register by submitting a quick form. We will then check and authorise your request for membership and send you a password. You can then login and create a blog.

We recently launched our new feature “MiniPics” which allows members to upload, comment on and share photo’s in user galleries.

We have today switched on our “groups” functionality.

You can now create a group to chat about a certain topic related to wargaming, and even have group MiniPic galleries!

Here’s how to run a wargaming group:

1. Simply login to your 6sided account.

2. Create a new group from the groups page (link is in your options menu at the top of the page once logged in). You are now the admin for that group. When another member joins the group they are a member. You can upgrade them to be a moderator or an Admin.

3. Create a gallery(s). Members can add photo’s to the galleries, only mods and admins can edit gallery contents.

4. Photo’s can be set private (group only) or public.

5. Mods can edit the conversation, members can converse via the comment stream ( like you do on your facebook page where people comment on status updates).

UPDATE ON SPAM PREVENTION.

We have now implelmented several things that should help reduce the spam all blog networks get. This is now the “nuclear option” in place. These are outlined below:
1. In your “comments” page, where you can approve/delete/spam comments, there is a new button called “check spam”. When you click that button is checks several international spam databases and if the comment authors email or IP address matches a reported spammer the comment is deleted. So clicking that button will auto-remove all known spam comments in one click.

2. Catpchas on all comment forms. Initially we took these off, but it is an extra step a human spammer has to take, so we have added captchas again.

3. Comments are also protected by a behind the scenes piece of software that helps to filter out known spam IP addresses before they even submit the comment.

4. A piece of software that filters out spam account registrations, to help minimise spam from other member accounts,

5. Moderation “flags” have been added to all areas of the site and all blogs. If you see an inappropriate blog post or comment, such as obvious spam, click on the “flag as inappropriate” link under that comment or post. It will report it to us in our admin panel and we can investigate.

What is MiniPics?

MiniPics is like FLickr, but exclusively for wargaming images. So by using MiniPics on 6Sided you can get your images seen by, commented on, and shared by more wargamers.

How Do I use It?

1. Create a 6sided account and login. You will see a menu at the top of the page:

Click on “Gallery” to enter the MiniPics management page:

2. Click on “create gallery”. You can then upload one or more images (max of 50 per gallery and no images larger than 1.9Mb in size). Click browse, then select the images you want to upload from your Pc and upload. Once completed you can then set a cover image and add detailed image descriptions and set your image titles.

3. You can share your own or other people’s MiniPic gallery images by clicking on the “share” link above an image as follows:

Simply copy the Embed code that appears when you select “share”. You can then paste this code into a blog post, forum, email, twitter, facebook etc, to share the image.

You can use the embed code on ANY blog, not just 6Sided blogs. So if you use blogger you can benefit from sharing images on 6Sided and sending more people to your blog by adding your blog URL in the image descriptions and your main profile. To use an embed code, in the editor where you write your log post,(both on 6sided or Blogger) click on the “HTML” tab and paste the code in. When you click on the visual tab you will then see the image. IF the embed code does not work, simply extract the image URL from the code and paste it in as a URL via the image uploader (same for 6sided and blogger).

To view all MiniPics galleries upload, click on the “MiniPics” menu item at the top of any page on the 6Sided main website.

We have today moved from using “captchas” (numbers/letters you enter to submit a form such as a comment) to a more “under the hood” method.

It has been obvious monitoring the network that the captchas are being bypassed by spammer software. This, in conjunction with some blog owners simply not managing their comments, is putting strain on the server.

So comment forms and account registration is not handled by software that works on automatic “rules” to judge is comment or account signup is spam. This could mean in some cases that genuine comments or signups are marked as spam.

If you try to create an account and are unable to complete the process, please contact us via th contact link at the bottom of the site so we can “whitelist” your IP address and email.

Hopefully the use of the “nuclear option” will minimise the automated spam that hits our server.

You can also report accepted comments and members who are obvious spammers by clicking on the “report as inappropriate” links that are now on member profile pages, under comments and under posts on blogs.
